This Funk rhythm guitar part uses the « skank » technique : we have to isolate the played notes and at the same time mute adjacent strings (still with the fretting hand fingers). In other words we should play and hear the note(s) and the percussive elements of the muted strings. So it’s quite difficult to get a clean playing at first and it takes quite some time to get this technique right.
As you can see just after the 16th note triplet, when we are back on the first beat, the picking hand plays an up stroke – a thing that never happens normally – So we have to get back in our regular picking motion and so we have to « suspend » the right hand just after the 16th note triplet.
